Abstract
This paper discusses the concept of alignment and the different domains in which it is used. The functionalist approach to alignment we have taken has limitations for our understanding of the concept. As a consequence, we put forward an interpretative approach as a framework to accomplish alignment in organisations. On this basis, a framework is drafted which could facilitate the study of alignment in organisations. This article hopes to encourage other researchers and change professionals to use this framework and investigate the degree of alignment in different organisations so that comparative studies can be carried out on this topic.
